My Patio & Backyard: Needs some Pier 1 Love

We are still experiencing chilly temperatures here in southeast Wisconsin. Last weekend we had a short break in the weather and I was able to get outside and work a little in the yard. I burned some leaves, picked up sticks and surveyed the pitiful furniture situation that lay before me.

I have a fabulous stone fire pit... surrounded by garage sale chairs with no cushions. I have a patio area where the concrete is buckling up. My yard is spacious with lots of trees and boatloads of potential.

I was thinking of getting a hammock, but then I spotted this amazing "Swingasan Chair" at Pier 1! Isn't it marvelous?? Now I'm craving this chair in all its glory and can picture myself sitting outside enjoying the breeze and listening to the birds chirp. I'm even thinking that we could hook this up in our bedroom in the cold months!

So I looked around some more and found this beautiful furniture arrangement. The rug is outstanding and the perfect frosting on this set. I love this set, it's made just like my sectional in my living room. There are corner pieces and inner pieces, you choose how many you want.

I think my backyard needs some serious TLC and I have just added these items to my wish list. I was pretty smitten with a lot of the different seating options too, my fire pit area needs it bad! The different cushion options are so pretty, I couldn't stop browsing around and coming up with ideas. Speaking of ideas, I found out that there are Pier 1 Tweetups that you can attend to get even more ideas. Fun!

Now if it would just get warm here in Wisconsin I'd be ready to enjoy the outdoors!

Quick Decor Items on a Budget

I'm pretty crafty. :) But you all know that already! So I have the ability to crank out some fun decorative items for my home. Not everyone can do that though, and my mother in law is no exception. Remember when I said there was an exciting giveaway coming?? Well I wasn't kidding! Back in August I was asked if I wanted to not only try out the uber cool Silhouette cutting machine, but also if I wanted to give one away to one of my readers. Hmmm, let me think... umm, YEAH! Menu Planning

Do you plan your meals? Over the years I have gone on and off the menu planning band wagon. When I plan my menu, my grocery shopping is more organized, I make less mid-week trips to the grocer, and best of all, I always know the answer to that question.. "Mom! What's for dinner?"

Over the summer my menu planning practices fell by the way side. Teenagers that sleep in until 1:00 PM are generally not interested in eating dinner at 6:00, especially since they just ate breakfast at 2:00! As my kids have grown into teens, they are home less, always out with their friends and running here and there. However, the school year is upon us once again and next week they'll all be back to school. That also means back to routine and dinner with the family.

I am a recipe-aholic. I save tons to my favorites and print out even more. My binders are overflowing with recipes to try someday. Then there's the cookbooks. I have plenty of them, and a select few favorites, all with a variety of page markers waiting for me.

So each week I sit down and look through my bookmarks, print outs and cookbooks. I have two sheets of paper going at once, one for my grocery list and one for my menu. Once I choose a recipe I write the name and source (print out, bookmark, cookbook name and page #, etc) down on the menu list, then I scan the ingredient list. If I need anything from the store for that recipe, I add it to my shopping list. Often times I try to find recipes for things I already have on hand, or those that use ingredients I have growing in my mini-garden.

Once I have the list of recipes created, I tape it inside my kitchen cabinet. These keeps it up and out of the way and I know right where it is.

Menu planning has several advantages:

1) helps you build your shopping list

2) takes the guesswork out of dinner each night

3) reduces the amount of money spent on take-out

I used to only do a menu plan for dinners, but now I use this same process to choose dessert recipes I want to bake that week. I don't bake everyday, so it's nice to keep organized and know I have the ingredients on hand for the treats I want to make.

Tips for Tackling the Laundry

It's funny, laundry is often a chore that people dread. I actually don't mind doing the laundry, it's putting it all away that's the real chore. I have 4 kids, so with hubby and I, that's 6 people to do laundry for. I've learned a few shortcuts over the years, but the best thing I ever did was to teach my kids how to do their own laundry!

Where one thing might work for me, it might not work for you. I work from home, so I have access to my laundry room all day long. When I worked outside of the home, I didn't have that luxury and had to do laundry on the weekends or at night. There is no such thing as ONE system that will work for everyone. However, I have included some ideas here that might be helpful to you.

WHEN and WHERE

Designate a certain day(s) of the week to do laundry (e.i. Saturdays, every other Wednesday, the 1st and 15th of each month, etc) and log it into your planner or family calendar.
Go through the house and collect the dirty laundry everyday and put it a centrally located hamper.
Have a designated spot for all dirty clothes so that each family member can help.
Put a basket for collecting dirty clothes in each person's bedroom, color code them to make it easier to identify.
Plan & utilize your time well while clothes are washing and/or drying.
Mark labels of clothes with initials of children who wear similar sizes or outfits.

DETERGENTS

Install or utilize existing shelving for your detergent, bleach, and fabric softeners.
Use an over-the-sink basket to hold detergents.
Premeasure your laundry soaps, powders, and softeners to use in a snap.
If you travel to the laundromat to wash clothes, keep a tote with your laundry supplies in the trunk of your car, and use film canisters to collect quarters in.
Keep a pretreater stick or spray bottle in your dirty clothes baskets in order to pretreat stains right away.

BEFORE THE WASH

Use plastic milk crates, tall kitchen garbage pails, large buckets, small laundry baskets, or you can purchase a tri-section laundry sorter for sorting dirty laundry.
Have a designated basket that is specifically for stained clothing only.
Use zipper mesh lingeree bags for each person's socks, these can be washed, dried, and returned to their owner.
Safety pin socks together to avoid matching later.
Avoid the mounds by following the rule: as soon as a basket fills, wash it.
For easy sorting for every family member, post signs above sorters or use color coded containers.
Sort clothes according to whites, reds, and darks.
Sort delicates and towels separately.

THE WASH

Vow to do at least one load per day, more if possible.
Arrange it so that the first person to get home starts the washer.
You may choose not to sort, but wash all clothes together, then bleach your whites once per month.
Keep a basket or two handy for removing clothes from the dryer for folding.
Set an egg timer so you don't forget to check on your loads!
Keep a small basket or clothespin bag next to your washer or dryer for orphan socks.

FOLDING and PUTTING IT AWAY

Fold clothes as soon as you remove them from the dryer.
Put the clothes away after folding, or designate certain days each week to put away folded clothes.
Make it a game to get the kids involved - sit in a circle with clothes in middle, have everyone fold and put clothes into piles.
Fold clothes in front of the TV or while helping kids with their homework.
Teach kids to fold their own clothes, start them on towels and dish cloths.
Use a table by the dryer to put folded clothes on. When the table is full, put the clothes away.
Use small plastic baskets to sort folded clothes into. Have children pick up their baskets and put their folded clothes away.
Purchase an inexpensive tension shower rod to hang clothes as they come out of the dryer.

Hopefully some of these tips were helpful. These days I'm lucky, I only wash my husband's and my clothes as all my kids are in charge of their own. My daughter is 16 and has been doing her own laundry (by choice) since she was in 5th grade. She can't stand the thought of someone else folding her underwear! ;) My 18 year old son learned how to do his laundry when he was in 6th grade, though I did it pretty regularly until last year. This summer I taught my 13 year old and 11 year old sons how to do theirs.

It's not a perfect system, but it works for us.

Raspberry Shortbread Sandwich Cookies & Brown Sugar Brownies

When C&H/Domino Sugar contacted me and asked if I would like to try some of their recipes, AND offered to send me a $20 gift card to cover the ingredients, of course I said yes :) They have some really fun ideas on their website, including plenty of Christmas cookies, ideas for hosting a cookie swap, recipes for homemade sugar scrubs and cookie mixes in a jar, and plenty more.

After perusing a while, I decided on the Raspberry Shortbread Sandwich Cookies and Brown Sugar Brownies.

Their recipe suggests using a star cookie cutter, but I chose a bell. I used the wide end of a decorating tip to make the hole that the jam peeks through. This was a very simple recipe, easy to roll out and cut and they tasted great! I made some with blackberry jam, some with Nutella, and some with both.

As with all shortbread, at least in my opinion, they taste best when cooled to room temperature, and even better the next day when the jam has had a chance to soak into the cookie! Yum.

As an alternative, I made some reindeer from the bell cutters by turning the bell shape upside down, pressing some broken pretzel sticks into the dough, and cutting two holes for eyes.

I didn't have any red hot candies, which would have worked well for the nose, so instead I pinched off small pieces of dough, rolled them into balls and rolled them in red sugar. Then I gently pressed those onto the dough and baked!

I definitely recommend polling the dough between sheets of parchment paper. It's easier to roll and to lift and chill.

Now for the brownies. Because I can never seem to leave well enough alone, I added some mint chips to my brownies instead of nuts.

This made them rather gooey, they were quite good! The recipe was very easy to put together, though next time I think I would stick with either regular chocolate chips or leave them out all together.

I lined the baking pan with foil before adding the batter. That makes it much easier to remove the brownies from the pan. Let them cool completely, then simply lift them out of the pan and cut!
